All roads lead to Wigan?Food and Drink!

More than 40,000 people are expected to take part in this year?s Wigan Food and Drink Festival spending an estimated ?250,000 in the local economy!

Once again local businesses have been at the forefront of this year?s festival, offering support and sponsorship, despite the extremely tough national economic climate.

Now, that generosity will be repaid with a massive post Christmas economic boost for the local economy.

Richard Broadly, General Manager of main food and drink sponsor, Hitchen Foods, said: ?16 per cent of the local economy in Wigan and Leigh is involved in food production so it?s a major employer and component of Wigan life.

?This festival gives businesses like ours the chance to highlight and shine a spotlight on local restaurants, restauranteurs, chefs, suppliers and producers in a genuine celebration of what is good about Wigan Borough?s food and drink industry and we?re tremendously proud to once again be involved with this wonderful festival.?

Highlights this year during the ten day festival include a demonstration and dinner hosted by celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli and there will be appearances by local sporting celebrities. And returning by popular demand in the brand new Piazza in Wigan Town Centre will be the wonderful Lancashire Hotpots. There will also be Fine Food Trails, a packed events programme and the ever popular outdoor Kitchen Theatre.

Wigan Food and Drink Festival starts on Thursday 1 March with the 25th CAMRA Wigan Beer Festival at Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre.

Organiser Keith Bergman from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: ?A full and varied programme has been put together during what are very challenging economic times for Wigan?s big businesses and particularly for our small enterprises.

2012 Wigan Food and Drink Festival at a glance

The 2012 festival will comprise a bigger than ever menu of events and activities including:

The Wigan Fine Food Trail. Featuring 15 of the Borough?s finest restaurants, each offering very special festival menus.

The Wigan CAMRA Beer Festival. (1st ? 3rd March). A festival in its own right and one of the largest and most popular real ale festivals in the north of England and celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.

There will be around 80 real ales, 35 ciders and perries with draught and some bottled continental beers. A free bus will be available once again from the Anvil Pub (timetable available nearer the time). The branch has taken the decision yet again to make no increase on affordable admission prices which have not changed for the last three years and as always CAMRA members get free admission at all sessions.

The Wigan Food and Drink Events Programme. 10 packed days and nights of special events taking place in local restaurants, pubs and other venues. In 2012 there will be wine tasting evenings, special dinner nights, menu launches, taster events, tours and cookery schools. Celebrity Chefs booked to appear include Jean-Christophe Novelli and star of BBC's Something for the Weekend - Simon Rimmer.

The Wigan Outdoor Market Kitchen Theatre. (5th ? 10th March). Six days of demonstrations taking place this year from the brand new Piazza at the Wiend in Wigan Town Centre. There will be ?Skool Dinners? - the brilliant Wigan Schools Young Chef of the Year Competition. There will be daily sessions hosted by local chefs with tastings and demonstrations. Celebrity chefs will also be take to the stage as well as local sporting stars involved across the week.

Food and Drink in the Community. A programme of talks, demonstrations and exhibitions within local libraries, community centres, museums and schools.?

Continental Marketplace. (7th ? 10th March) a street full of colourful and cultural food and drink traders from around the world. Complimented by entertainment and demonstrations. And returning on Saturday 10 March are the wonderful - Lancashire Hotpots, performing live from the stage in the Piazza .

Shortly after the close of the Civil War, in which he had borne arms for the government, Mr. Weeks came to Kansas and purchased the farm in Douglas County which he has since occupied. He has devoted himself assiduously to agricultural pursuits and has become known as one of the energetic, efficient farmers of Palmyra Township.? His landed possessions now aggregate two hundred and ten acres in Douglas County, one hundred and sixty in Logan County, this state, and four hundred and eighty in eastern Colorado. Of recent years he has given considerable attention to the breeding of Durham cattle, and it is his intention to use much of his land for ranching purposes. Mr. Weeks was born in Peekskill, N.Y., April 29, 1842. His father, Samuel, was born and reared in the same state, and in early life was clerk on a steamboat and also teacher of the officers? children at West Point, but resigned the latter position in order to enter the ministry.? The eldest of the family, our subject, was educated in public schools. In April, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, Fifth Missouri Cavalry, and was mustered in at St. Joe for three years. For a time he was stationed on the border and took part in skirmishes with the bushwhackers and with Quantrell?s men. He was mustered out at the end of fourteen months. August 22, 1863, he enlisted a second time, becoming a member of Company D, Eighth Iowa Cavalry, at Davenport. With his regiment he marched to Nashville, Tenn., and spent the winter in that city, going from there to Cleveland, the same state, and thence to the Atlanta campaign. During his service he had several narrow escapes but was never wounded nor taken prisoner. He was mustered out at Macon, Ga.,? in August 1865.

Returning home our subject remained there for a short time, then came to Kansas and settled in Douglas County, with the subsequent development of which he has been identified. He is a member of Seth Kelley Post No. 410, G.A.R. , at Vinland, also belongs to Palmyra Lodge No. 23 A.F. & A.M. , of Baldwin. His family are connected with the Methodist Church, and he is in sympathy with and contributes to, its maintenance, but is not identified with the congregation. By his marriage to Miss Julia Snyder , of Utica, Ind. , he had eight children, namely: Elizabeth, wife of H.E. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Flight attendants and ground workers marched in picket lines Tuesday to protest American Airlines' plans to outsource jobs and cut pay and benefits under a bankruptcy reorganization.

Several of the protesters acknowledged having little hope of changing the company's course. Some said that they expect to be laid off soon.

There appeared to be 200 to 250 protesters at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. A few passengers disembarked from cars and rolled their bags into the international terminal while avoiding contact with the pickets.

The event was a reminder of the long and bitter divide between labor and management at American, the third-largest airline in America. There may also be differences ? at least in style ? among the workers themselves. The pilots' union skipped the protest, preferring to take a less confrontational approach.

American and its parent, AMR Corp., filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29 after running up billions of dollars in losses over the past decade. Two weeks ago, AMR laid out a plan to cut 13,000 jobs, kill its pension plans, reduce benefits and make other changes such as longer hours for some of its 88,000 employees.

Under bankruptcy law, the company can try to negotiate new labor contracts with unions. If that fails, it can ask the bankruptcy judge to impose the company's plan.

"I don't think this is going to do anything to change management's opinion as far as our (contract negotiations), but it's something we can do to show support for each other," said Angelica Abrams, a Dallas-based flight attendant with 30 years at American.

Laura Glading, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, also predicted that the company is determined to walk away from previous labor contracts. "We're here today to show we're not going to back down without a fight," she said.

American said the event didn't disrupt passengers at DFW, one of its five major U.S. hub airports.

Company spokesman Bruce Hicks said that restructuring American "is a difficult but necessary process." He said every employee group, including management, would be affected.

"Our goal is to exit as a growing, profitable company that preserves tens of thousands of jobs," Hicks said.

Body Talk ? Business presentations and body language

A few years ago, a group of rising-star executives gathered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to take part in a special competitive event. Each was to present a business plan to be evaluated by the entire group. The best ideas would then be recommended to a team of venture capitalists for final evaluation. Participants saw this as a great opportunity to see how their ideas compared to others in an elite peer group.

If you had been one of those chosen executives, how would you have prepared for the event? Would you have concentrated on formulating a coherent description of your business plan? Developed a strategy for convincing others? Practiced your presentation skills?

The executives at the MIT event probably did all of these. But on the day of the competition, an additional component was added to the mix ? one nobody had prepared for. Each presenter was outfitted with a specially designed digital sensor, worn like an I.D. badge. This device, called a ?Sociometer,? would be taking notes on each presentation along with the rest of the group, But not on the merits of what was being said. Unbeknownst to the presenters, the Sociometer would be recording what wasn?t being said: tonal variety, vocal nuance, physical activity, energy levels, even the number of smiles and nods exchanged between presenter and audience.

At the end of the meeting, the group selected the ideas they agreed would sell best. And, with no knowledge of any actual content, the Sociometer readings also predicted (with about 87% accuracy) which business plans would be chosen. That?s because, while the group thought they were making rational choices, the researchers at the MIT Media Lab, who had developed the digital device, knew better. What convinced the executive group is the same set of signals that also predict the outcome of any business presentation you may give ? body language and nonverbal interactions.

In my work as a leadership communication coach, I emphasize the importance of delivering a well-written speech that has an inspiring vision, engaging stories, self-deprecating humor, and personalized examples. But I also know that leaders can sabotage a great presentation if they underestimate or ignore the power of body language.

I don?t want you to make that mistake. Here are seven of the most important tips for effective body language on stage:

1. Manage your stress level

While you are waiting backstage, notice the tension in your body. Realize that some nervous energy is a good thing ? it?s what makes your presentation lively and interesting, but too much stress results in nonverbal behaviors that work against you.

Before you go on stage, stand or sit with your weight ?centered? ? evenly distributed on both feet or sit bones. Look straight ahead with your chin level to the floor and relax your throat. Take several deep ?belly? breaths. Count slowly to six as you inhale and increase the tension in your body by making fists and tensing the muscles in your arms torso and legs. As you exhale, allow your hands, arms and body to release and relax.

2. Get emotional

In order to engage an audience, they need to be emotionally involved. So before you go on stage to deliver your message, concentrate on emotions and feelings. How do you personally emotionally connect with what you are about to say? What do you feel about it? How do you want the audience to feel? (The more you focus on the emotion behind your message, the more convincing and congruent your body language will automatically become.)

3. Make a confident entrance

Staying relaxed, walk out on stage with good posture, head held high, and a steady, smooth gait. When you arrive at center stage, stop, smile, raise your eyebrows and slightly widen your eyes while you look around the room. A relaxed, open face and body tells your audience that you?re confident and comfortable with the information you?re delivering. Since audience members will be reacting to any display of tension, your state of comfort will also relax and reassure them. (This may sound like common sense, but I once worked with a manager who walked onstage with hunched shoulders, a furrowed brow and squinted eyes. I watched the audience squirm in response. It was an unsettling way to begin a ?let?s get together and support this change? speech.)

4. Maintain eye contact

Maintain steady eye contact with the audience throughout the talk. If you don?t, you will quickly signal that you don?t want to be there, that you aren?t really committed to your message, or that you have something to hide.

While it is physically impossible to maintain eye contact with the entire audience all the time, you can look at specific individuals or small groups, hold their attention briefly, and then move to another group or individual in another part of the room.

5. Ditch the lectern

Whenever possible, get out from behind the lectern. A lectern not only covers up the majority of your body, it also acts as a barrier between you and the audience. Practice the presentation so well that you don?t need to read from a script. If you use notes, request a video prompter at the foot of the stage.

6. Talk with your hands

Speakers use hand gestures to underscore what?s important and to express feelings, needs and convictions. When people are passionate about what they are saying, their gestures become more animated. That?s why gestures are so critical and why getting them right in a presentation connects so powerfully with an audience. If you don?t use them (if you let your hands hang limply to your sides or clasp them in the classic ?fig leaf? position), it suggests you don?t recognize the crucial issues, you have no emotional investment in the issues, or that you?re not an effective communicator.

7. Move

Human beings (males, most especially) are drawn to movement. Movement keeps an audience from becoming bored. It can be very effective to walk toward the audience before making an important point, and away when you want to signal a break or a change of subject. But don?t move when you are making a key point. Instead, stop, widen your stance, and deliver that important message.
