Windsor native Michelle Pierce spent the past week in Winnipeg at the selection camp for Canada?s national A and B women?s volleyball teams.
Now a middle hitter for York University, Pierce was one of 12 players from Ontario among the 49 invitees.
Those selected for both national teams will remain in Winnipeg to train for a month.
Then, the A team will be announced and they will play an exhibition series with Team Argentina July 7-10 in Winnipeg. Both nationals will be preparing for the Pan Am Cup in Mexico, a qualification event for the 2013 World Grand Prix.
Pierce, a graduate of Massey, started her CIS career with the University of Windsor before transferring to York.
Ekblad nominated
Belle River?s Aaron Ekblad was one of three nominees for the Canadian Hockey League?s top rookie award, which will be announced this afternoon at the Memorial Cup in Shawinigan.
Ekblad, who won the OHL rookie of the year with 29 points in 63 games with the Barrie Colts, is joined by Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Remparts and Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice.
Defending champs
The boys soccer team at Cardinal Carter defeated L?Essor 2-0 in the WECSSAA AA final Friday.
Bradley DosSantos and Louis Cortes each scored goals while Chris Dias posted the shutout for the Cougars, who?ll host the SWOSSAA tournament Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. against a team to be announced.
It?s the second consecutive year the Cougars have taken the WECSSAA championship from the Aigles.
Francophone event
Twenty-two high school soccer teams from across the province are on the fields surrounding L?Essor for the Ontario Francophone Invitational tournament.
L?Essor teacher/coach Lucien Gava started the tournament 18 years ago.
It rotates around the province with L?Essor hosting it last in 2004.
Competition in girls and boys opened Thursday with finals set for today at 11:30 a.m.
Siddall hit
Windsor?s Brett Siddall hit an RBI single in the second inning as the Canadian junior national baseball team battled to a 3-3 tie against the Toronto Blue Jays Dominican prospects Friday.
Siddall singled to left field with the bases loaded to bring in a run for the Canadians, who dropped their second game of the doubleheader later in the day against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Siddall pitched one inning in relief during the ninth, giving up a run in a 6-1 loss to the Brewers. Windsor?s Jacob Robson was held hitless for Canada, which is back in action against the Chicago Cubs Dominican prospects.
Can-Am Baseball
John Pico was the winning pitcher and the Windsor Star defeated Windsor A.A. 2-0 Friday in Can-Am Senior League baseball.
Tom Grubb was 2-for-3 for the Stars while Cam Goddard drove in the winning run.
Clippers win
The Windsor Clippers are in a three-way tie for first place in the Far West division following an 11-9 win against Wallaceburg Friday in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league.
Lucas Ducharme, Tyler McDowall, Jarred Riley and Jeff Rivait each scored two goals while Cody Holmes, Brendon Anger and Bryan Larogue had a goal apiece.
Goalie Kyle May had 35 saves for the Clippers (6-4), who host Mid West-leading Orangeville (7-3) today at Forest Glade Arena at 7 p.m.
Viking tourney
The Tecumseh Thunder 18U baseball team went undefeated on the weekend to win the Vaughan Viking Invitational midget major baseball tournament.
Josh Cowan was the winning pitcher as the Thunder (6-0) defeated Vaughan 7-4 in the final.
Matt Sykes, who got the save, also threw a one-hit shutout earlier in the tournament.
Jonathan Roehler batted .580 overall and was the winning pitcher in Game 2.
Keifer Quick batted .350 with two homeruns and 13 RBIs, Kyle Tremblay batted .436 with 10 RBIs and Ryan Gignac and Crannel Jerald batted .350.
Mulder cut
Catholic Central star Mychal Mulder was one of the last cuts made to get down to the 12 players who will make up Canada?s junior boys basketball team.
Mulder survived an open tryout with over 30 players, only four of whom were invited to the four-day camp in Toronto.
Over four days, the group of 27 was whittled down to 17. Mulder was one of the final five cuts on the last day.
?Although extremely disappointed to get that close and not make it, we are extremely proud of his showing,? Catholic Central coach Pete Cusumano wrote.
Canadian hoops
The Canadian senior women?s B basketball team is 0-2 after losing a 63-52 exhibition game against Montenegro in Montenegro.
?Defence kept us in the game tonight,? Amherstburg?s Korissa Williams said.
?We are beginning to play as a cohesive unit and I am looking forward to playing our next three games in Belgium.?
Also on the Canadian team are Miah-Marie Langlois, Tessa Kreiger and Chantal Vallee of the Lancers.
World wrestling
Tecumseh wrestler Jessica Bondy-MacDonald will represent Canada at the FILA Women?s World Cup today in Tokyo.
The reigning 51-kg Canadian champion will compete in the last event of the FILA World Cup circuit.
Bondy-MacDonald fell just short of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Games last year, losing to Calgary?s Carol Huynh in the 48 kg at the Olympic Trials in Winnipeg.
Ottawa track
Windsor?s Jamie Adjetey-Nelson headlines Canada?s entry at the 2012 Panamerican Combined Events Cup in Ottawa today.
Adjetey-Nelson, who enters with a personal best of 8,239 points, sits third on the Canadian all-time list behind Michael Smith and David Steen.
LaSalle driver
LaSalle?s Ed Smith driving his 2011 American chassis dragster lost to Bailey Atkinson of Camlachie, Ont., and her 2011 Mike Bos chassis dragster during the first race weekend of the year at the Grand Bend Motorplax.
Smith was disqualified from the Top ET event with a red light start while Atkinson ran 7.96 seconds at 152 m.p.h. in the quarter-mile race.
In Mod ET, Mark Gubinski of Essex was also disqualified with a red light start, giving away the win to Ray Ruehle of Washington, Mich,
