Scientists graft working eyes onto tadpole tails

Researchers surgically removed the eyes of tadpoles and then grafted new eyes onto their tales. Some of these tadpoles were able to pass a vision test with their new eyes.

These findings could help guide therapies involving natural or artificial implants, scientists added.

A major roadblock when it comes to?treating blindness?and other sensory disorders is how much remains unknown about the nervous system and its ability to adapt to change. To learn more about the relationship between the body and the brain, researchers wanted to see how capable the brain was of interpreting sensory data from abnormal "ectopic" locations from which it normally does not receive? signals.

Eye on the tail

Scientists experimented with 134 tadpoles of the?African clawed frog?Xenopus laevis, a common lab animal. They painstakingly grafted new eyes onto places such as their torsos and tails and then surgically removed their original eyes. [See Images of the Odd-Eyed Tadpoles]

"We do a lot of work to understand regenerative biology, and that entails experiments that change the body," researcher Michael Levin, a developmental biologist at Tufts University, told LiveScience. "We have four-headed worms, six-legged frogs, and many other?unusual creatures?here as part of our work on bioelectricity and organ regeneration."

These experimental tadpoles then received a vision test the researchers first refined on normal tadpoles. The tadpoles were placed in a circular arena half illuminated with red light and half with blue light, with software regularly switching what color light the areas received. When tadpoles entered places lit by red light, they received a tiny electric zap. A motion-tracking camera kept tabs on where the tadpoles were.

Remarkably, the scientists found that six tadpoles that had eyes implanted in their tails could apparently see, choosing to remain in the safer blue-light areas.

"The brain is not wired to find an eye on the tail, since it's never happened before and thus is not something the brain has evolved specifically to deal with, and yet it can recognize this patch of tissue as providing valuable visual information," Levin said.

"These findings suggest that the?brain has remarkable plasticity?and may actually take a survey of its body configuration to make use of different body arrangements," Levin added. "If it were not the case, then every time a mutation produced an improvement in body plan ? a large significant change in anatomy ? the animal would die and the beneficial mutation would be lost."

Rather, when a mutation makes a change in the body plan of an embryo, the brain-body programs that tell an eye to see and a hand to grasp, for instance, "don't suddenly become useless," Levin said. "The brain can map its activity onto a wide range of configurations of the body. This modularity makes it much easier for complex new body features to evolve."

Augmentation technology

The transplanted eyes came from tadpole donors genetically modified to generate a red fluorescent protein. As such, the researchers could see under a microscope whether these eyes sent red nerves outward in the body. Half the recipient tadpoles had no such nerves grow, while about a quarter had nerves projecting toward the gut and the other quarter had nerves extending toward their spine.

The six tadpoles that could see well all had nerves plugged into their spine, which makes sense ? their eyes apparently linked with their central nervous system.

"This has implications not only for regenerative medicine ? replacing damaged sensory and motor organs ? but also for augmentation technology," Levin said. "Perhaps you'd like some more eyes, maybe ones that?see in infrared?" [Bionic Humans: Top 10 Technologies]

One question Levin and his colleagues often get asked "is whether the tadpoles are experiencing sight from these ectopic eyes like they do from normal eyes," Levin said. "We have no idea what a tadpole is experiencing. This is a philosophical question that is not immediately tractable.

"Another thing people sometimes assume is that this capability is only for tadpoles or 'lower' animals," Levin said. "In fact, this kind of thing probably works in humans also,?as evidenced by related studies over the last few years. Brain plasticity is a fundamental aspect of the function of the nervous system and its interface to the body."

The researchers seek to figure out three other aspects: which brain regions are processing the sensory data, how many extra eyes a frog brain can handle, and how the brain knows that this piece of tissue on the tail is providing visual data, and not simply indicating an infection, injury or other sense like smell, Levin said.

Levin and his colleague Douglas Blackiston detailed their findings online today (Feb. 27) in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Michael Clarke plays down spin factor after opening Test defeat ? Cricket News Update

Despite the Indian spinners sharing all 20 wickets in the opening Test, Australia skipper, Michael Clarke, played down the spin factor, and labeled the defeat on his side?s inability to perform as a unit.

In their first outing on Indian soil, the tourists were easily rolled over by the spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom ensured that the hosts struck first blood in the four-match Test series.

The signs were ominous from the start after Ashwin claimed a quickfire five-for in the opening two sessions of the game. However, Clarke and debutant Moises Henriques steadied the innings and provided hope for the Aussie contingent, who then went onto compile a respectable 380 on the board.

The game nonetheless, swung in India?s favour on day 3 when their batting clicked to pile a whooping 572 on the board, with their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni scoring a stupendous double hundred. With the pitch now offering appreciable turn, Indian spinners duly got into the act and dismissed the Aussies for 241, leaving their batters to chase a mere 50.

Ashwin remained the chief tormentor, collecting 12 wickets in the match, and was given good support by Harbhajan and Jadeja. In contrast, the Aussies were left to rue their bowling combination, which had three fast bowlers and the lone spinner in Nathan Lyon.

Lyon ended with match figures of 4 for 244, while the only pacer to offer support was James Pattinson, who claimed 6 scalps, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings. Clarke however, did not blame the team composition for the defeat but lamented his side?s poor showing in the second innings.

"Australian spin took three wickets in the first innings, fast bowling took a lot more," Clarke said. "That doesn't mean to say that playing three fast bowlers and a medium-pace all-rounder, we got that right. We need to assess, we need to look at conditions again and work out what we think is the best XI [in Hyderabad].?It's not just about selection, it's about how you perform, I don't think we bowled well enough in our first innings and we certainly didn't bat well enough in our second innings. "?

5 Easy Tips to Simplify Your Business Accounting | Young ...

After starting three small businesses, I?ve learned firsthand the headaches that accounting causes for most small business owners. It?s one of those back-office tasks that never cross your mind when you decide to run your own business, and yet it sucks up your day and makes running a successful business that much harder.

But there?s hope, and it starts with getting organized.?Here are 5 tips I?ve learned by helping business owners trying to tackle their accounting:

  1. Keep it separate.?That new backpack for your kids isn?t a business expense, but your business credit card was handy so you used it. Sure, you can pay back your business for a personal expenditure, or the other way around, but if you?re going to do it right you actually have to record an accounting transaction. Things get complicated fast, and you don?t need that headache. By keeping separate bank and credit card accounts for business and personal, you?ll save yourself hours of work and make it easy to keep track of deductible expenses in one place.?Some applications can automatically handle the behind-the-scenes accounting for crossover expenses, but even so, we recommend handling business and personal finances as independently as possible.
  2. Call in a pro.?Since the days of the abacus, accountants have been trusted and respected allies to small business owners everywhere. Their intimate knowledge of the profession as well as tax laws in their jurisdiction will save you money almost every time. I know how tempting it can be to save a buck and do it yourself, but it?s almost never more cost-efficient in the end. An accountant will almost always find more deductions and keep you penalty-free.?On that note, the cleaner your records, the fewer billable hours you?ll have to pay, so make sure you?re organized year-round. But when things get technical or taxes are due, save yourself the money, time and headaches and call in a trusted professional.
  3. Pencil it in.?Actually, use a pen. A permanent marker even. Set aside about 15 minutes every week ? that?s the equivalent of just one Facebook visit every seven days ? to organize your finances, and don?t let other things take priority during this time.? You?ll have more insights into your business, be able to make more informed financial decisions and have everything organized when tax time approaches.?Something always feels more pressing than your finances. But when you find the time every week, you?ll feel your stress levels ? now and at year-end ? fall fast.
  4. Consider your people.?When you?re looking for insights into your businesses spending, don?t forget to properly track what is likely one of your biggest expenses: labor.?Whether you?re paying a full staff or you?re the only one on the payroll, make sure you?re tracking the costs of wages, benefits, overtime and any other costs associated with labor.?By tracking your spending on labor, perks and benefits, you may find you have more money to incentivize your employees ? or that you?re outspending your budget. Either way, doing the math now can help you make better decisions later.
  5. Finally, don?t forget to get paid.?This one seems pretty obvious, but you would be shocked at how many small business owners don?t properly track invoices and customer payments. If you?re not keeping proper records that you can make sense of at a glance, it could be months before you realize you have outstanding invoices.?You could be collecting payments late, or missing some altogether. Make sure you?re properly tracking all payments due and recording when each invoice is paid, how long customers generally take to pay, and which customers you?ve had difficulties collecting payments from in the past.

93% The Gatekeepers

All Critics (41) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (38) | Rotten (3)

A sobering but welcome dose of honesty regarding issues and events that have otherwise been shrouded in secrecy and overheated rhetoric.

Israelis, generally speaking, tend to be tough, but the men who've commanded Shin Bet, Israel's secret service, are in a whole other category.

A lesser filmmaker might've been tripped up by such a narrow focus. A lesser filmmaker might've misjudged the melange of archival footage, fabricated surveillance footage and talking heads, which Moreh handles with a blend of cinematic flash and tact.

The film makes explicit and implicit endorsements. The strategy of vengeance and overkill is ineffective and leads Israel to horrific behavior described only through metaphor.

The subjects' openness is refreshing - and sometimes frightening.

A feat - of access and of passionate and appropriately unsettling political commentary.

Filmmaker Dror Moreh gives a unique look, from those in the know, of the inner workings of Israel's home intelligence service.

As Moreh probes the men, we, whether we agree with them or not, find ourselves drawn into their moral maze in all of its complexity.

This is a film that leaves a knot in the stomach, and no easy solutions as to how to get rid of it.

The 'other' Oscar-nominated feature about a war on terror, Dror Moreh's documentary The Gatekeepers proves more intellectually engaging than Hollywood's Zero Dark Thirty, and at least as unsettling.

Important and incomplete.

A blunt, clear-eyed, first-hand take on decades of Middle Eastern history, from practically the founding of the Jewish state up through the recent fits and starts of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Moreh has assembled a thorough, evenhanded and fascinating examination of people and operations straight out of a spy novel.

This brave documentary draws a line in the sand. One just wishes Moreh had asked these men what they were doing to change the situation now other than having changed their minds.

From the moment you hear one of these former insiders admitting his misgivings over an act of violence he perpetrated, you can't help but be drawn in.

The access boggles the mind, and some of the stories are riveting.

[T]houghtfully examines the difficulties of protecting a democracy from internal enemies. . .with realpolitik towards peace [and] repeated criticism of government leaders.

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs. PadFone 2... fight!

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs PadFone 2 fight!

We happened to have a PadFone 2 with us at ASUS' MWC event, so it was only natural for us to put it next to the brand-spanking-new PadFone Infinity for a few photos. Unlike the jump from the original PadFone to the PadFone 2, the latest generation ditches the polycarbonate body with the iconic zen pattern in favor of an aerospace-grade aluminum unibody. Placing the PadFone Infinity and its shorter predecessor side by side you can see that the former is actually slimmer over all, and we dig the premium feel as well. Other notable differences include a new position for the loudspeaker, which is now on the top right side of the bezel instead of the back; and the 13-megapixel camera is now off-center.

You'd think the smaller PadFone 2 would easily fit into the bigger bay in the new PadFone Station (using the same special micro-USB socket), but interestingly, it didn't work for us. We might give it another go when we eventually get hold of a review unit, of course (it's OK, Jonney, we'll be gentle).

Duracell Powermat adding mesh network, scaleable power to its wireless charging plates

Duracell

Duracell Powermat is announcing a pair of new features to encourage sales of its wireless charging gear. The first is "Mesh Network," a set of controls that let multiple hotspots be centrally monitored -- so if you're stealing all the juice in the Wall St. Starbucks, central office can cut you off. On the upside, those same network features will enable you to find another charging hotspot on your smartphone, including Madison Square Garden and Jay-Z's 40/40 club. The second feature is that the latest mats will be able to vary the power on offer between 5 and 50 watts, making them capable of recharging smartphones, tablets and (potentially) Ultrabooks. Now all we have to do is work out how to power all of our electronics without arousing the suspicions of Jay-Z -- we'd hate to add a 100th problem to his worry list.

Confessions of a part-time working mom: Preparations for the ...

?St. Patrick?s Day Leprechaun Craft

Ever since Christmas has been over, Colin has been asking about that ?green holiday when the funny little men come to our house for practical jokes again?.? So we went online in order to find leprechaun trap ideas. Of all the ones made out of cardboard or wood he found the edible version the coolest: And I?ll admit, it does look fancy ? but I?m not there with my food coloring and frosting piping skills just yet! So for the time being we agreed to make some leprechaun crafts using toilet paper rolls. We followed the instructions from this family fun video

Except we learned not to paint the whole paper roll green but to spare space for the face and hands.

We also had trouble gluing the hair and beard on and found that stapling was not the way to go, so we went glue hunting and used desperate measures ;-)

All in all, the video tutorial looked easier than reality at home. And honestly, who has all those crafts supplies ?lying around the house? as they say? Clover buttons? Do you? We don?t, and also we didn?t purchase buttons, but stickers. And some were too large for the side of the hat, so we put them on the top.

??

So maybe you want to give it a try and make some leprechauns of your own? They sure look cute. We might put them on the dinner table on the 17th.

?If not, you can always give the cake a try!!! Or those cute cookies:

PS: did you notice, we forwent the arms and feet. Enough is enough!

Good Advice On Managing Your Next Payday Loan | Fathead ...

TIP! Research any company that you are considering using for your payday loan, as many have hidden fees or extremely high interest rates. Do business only with companies that have been around longer than five years.

You can use a payday loan to get cash pretty quickly. If you are facing a financial crisis and really need cash fast, you may want to turn to a payday loan. Read on for some common payday loan considerations. Before making a payday loan decision, use the tips shared here.

TIP! When taking out a cash advance, make sure there is a written contract of some sort. Many times, the clerks aren?t educated about the details or policies differ from what is told or advertised.

Prior to agreeing to a payday loan, be sure all of your questions are answered. It doesn?t matter how unimportant you think the question is, it is critical that you understand every single step of the process before committing to it. Don?t worry about how the questions make you appear; ask whatever is on your mind.

TIP! When you applying for a payday loan, you may actually have to work out a contract wherein you are using a post-dated check in order to ensure the repayment of your debt. You must be certain that you will actually have funds in your account to cover the check on the specified date.

Have a solid plan for paying the loan back. If you do not pay your loans off immediately, you are risking high interest rates in the future. Do no fall for it. You must find out what you can contribute towards your debt. Calculate how much you can pay back every week and find a loan that corresponds to your budget.

TIP! Do not take out a payday loan for much more than you can afford to repay. There are some companies that might want to give you more than the amount you want so you will default and incur charges.

Avoid cash advances unless there are no other oprions. Do not use it to buy something that is not necessary. Examples of using a payday loan frivolously including buying anime DVDs or new fashion accessories. This is wasting your hard-earned cash. Keep in mind that payday cash advances must be paid back soon.

TIP! If you?re taking out a payday loan, understand that this is essentially your next paycheck. When you get your money you must know that your paycheck will not be avaiable to you! If you do not consider this fact, you will wind up with another loan, thus beginning a cycle of debt that can continue indefinitely.

Don?t consolidate multiple cash advances into one large loan. If you cannot pay off the smaller loans, you will never be able to pay the larger one. Try to find ways to pay your loan with a smaller interest rate so you can out from under the payday loan.

TIP! You should understand the high interest that payday loans charge you. If possible, try getting the money from a different source because it isn?t common for annual rates to be over 300%.

As the article went over earlier, getting a payday loan can help you when you need fast cash. Before you get yourself a payday loan, you have to go over this article carefully and remember its advice. All the knowledge you now have should help you avoid making any mistakes when it comes to payday advances.

(AP) ? Some dressed down in jeans and hoodies. Others looked camera-ready in suits or chic dresses and spiky stilettos.

But all of the stars who rehearsed Saturday for the 85th Academy Awards seemed excited about being a part of the big show.

They paraded through the Dolby Theatre in 15-minute increments: Meryl Streep. Ben Affleck. Reese Witherspoon. Richard Gere. Jennifer Aniston. John Travolta. Nicole Kidman. Jack Nicholson. And dozens more.

Each practiced their lines in front of an audience of show workers and awarded prop Oscars to rehearsal actors. They also scanned the theater from the stage, searching for their show-night seats.

"Oh, wow. That's a very dramatic picture of me," best-actress nominee Jessica Chastain said after spotting her seat-saving placard. "I'm looking at everyone's headshots. It's kind of incredible."

Affleck confessed his excitement from the stage as he looked out at all the famous faces expected Sunday.

"This is like the most memorable aspect of the Oscars," the "Argo" director said. "You see all these place cards (at rehearsal), then you come back and they're all here!"

Affleck also chatted backstage with the college students who won a contest to serve as trophy carriers during the ceremony.

"I love that," he said. "It's super cool."

Travolta also took time with the students.

"I was there when that idea was born and I said it was the best idea they could possibly come up with," he told the aspiring filmmakers backstage. "And here you are!"

Travolta plans to bring his 13-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu, to the ceremony.

Kidman made rehearsals a family affair. Husband Keith Urban and their eldest daughter, Sunday, watched from the audience as Kidman ran through her lines.

She looked impeccable in a wine-colored dress and tall, metallic shoes, but other stars were decidedly more casual. Kristen Stewart arrived in jeans, sneakers and a backward ballcap. (She also limped on an injured right foot.) Renee Zellweger also opted for comfort in jeans and running shoes.

The cast of "Chicago," including Gere, Zellweger, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones, injected their rehearsal with silliness. Latifah purposely over-enunciated her lines, and when a pair of rehearsal actors claimed an Oscar onstage and gave an acceptance speech, Zeta-Jones started to play them off with an imaginary violin.

"Get outta here!" Gere said with a smile.

Octavia Spencer, who won the supporting actress Oscar last year for her performance in "The Help," also had a little fun.

"I'm going to do a soft-shoe," she said, shuffling off stage.

Streep and Jane Fonda were each wowed by the set design. Fonda snapped a photo of it with her iPhone, and Streep marveled at how far the walk to the microphone was.

"All the way to here?!" she asked. "Oh my God."

Halle Berry literally stumbled during her first rehearsal, her pointy heel catching on part of the stage. She insisted on trying again.

"Woo hoo," she said. "Made it."

Oil prices recover

Oil prices have recovered slightly, after two days of losses stoked by concerns that prices had outrun weak growth in demand.

New York's main contract, WTI crude for April, gained 29 cents to $US93.13 a barrel on Friday.

In London, Brent North Sea crude for April delivery finished at $114.10 a barrel up 57 cents from Thursday.

The modest rebound came after New York prices fell more that $4.50 a barrel over the past two days.

"We had a dramatic selloff this week and we are just seeing some short-covering, some profit-taking," said John Kilduff of Again Capital, adding that $93 "seems to be the new support level."

Jason Hughes, head of premium client management at IG Markets in Singapore, said it was "possible that we do have the bargain hunters looking to pick up oil at these levels".

Traders brushed off more data showing a prolonged recession in the eurozone, getting instead encouragement from a rise in German business confidence, said analysts.

"With the equity markets focused more on German business confidence than downward revisions to eurozone economic forecasts, the petroleum markets are seeing at least a limited bounce after the Wednesday-Thursday drop," said Tim Evans at Citi Futures.

"The height of the bounce - whether today or into next week - will provide an indication of whether oil market bullish sentiment is resilient or whether further urgent long liquidation is on tap."

(AP) ? North Korea warned the top American commander in South Korea on Saturday of "miserable destruction" if the U.S. military presses ahead with routine joint drills with South Korea set to begin next month.

Pak Rim Su, chief of North Korea's military delegation to the truce village of Panmunjom inside the Demilitarized Zone, sent the warning Saturday morning to Gen. James Thurman, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said, in a rare direct message to the U.S. commander.

The threat comes as the U.S. and other nations discuss how to punish North Korea for conducting an underground nuclear test on Feb. 12 in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions banning Pyongyang from nuclear and missile activity.

North Korea has characterized the nuclear test, its third since 2006, as a defensive act against U.S. aggression. Pyongyang accuses Washington of "hostility" for leading the charge to punish North Korea for a December rocket launch that the U.S. considers a covert missile test.

The U.S. and North Korea fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, and left the Korean Peninsula divided by a heavily fortified border monitored by the U.S.-led U.N. Command.

Washington also stations 28,500 American troops in South Korea to protect its ally against North Korean aggression.

South Korea and the U.S. regularly conduct joint drills such as the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises slated to take place next month. North Korea calls the drills proof of U.S. hostility, and accuses Washington of practicing for an invasion.

"You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction," KCNA quoted Pak as saying in his message to Thurman. He called the drills "reckless."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, has been making a round of visits to military units guiding troops in drills and exercises since the nuclear test, KCNA said.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A Republican-led committee is rejecting Gov. Steve Bullock's plan to increase the mandatory hiring percentage of Montana workers on public-works projects in the state.
???
The House Business and Labor Committee tabled House Bill 490 Thursday with an 11-9 vote.
???
The measure would have required that at least 75 percent of the laborers on state or local projects be Montana residents. The current requirement is 50 percent.
???
Democratic Rep. Amanda Curtis of Butte is carrying the bill for the governor. She told the House panel that neighboring states have even more stringent mandates.
???
Idaho requires that 95 percent of public-works laborers are state residents. Wyoming and North Dakota have similar measures.
???
The Montana Contractors Association backed the measure during a Wednesday news conference.

US?wrestlers shake hands with Iran president

Members of the U.S. wrestling team shook hands and took pictures with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at an awards ceremony on Friday, after they finished third in a tournament in Tehran.

The American and Iranian wrestling teams, which were in Iran?s capital to compete in a freestyle wrestling World Cup event, are fighting ?arm-in-arm? for the survival of their sport after it was recommended to be removed from the 2020 Olympics schedule by the IOC in a vote last week during an executive board meeting.

The cooperation between the nations is being compared to the famous ?Ping-pong Diplomacy? of the early-1970s, when U.S. and Chinese players competed against one another in friendly tournaments that many believe paved the way for then President Nixon to visit Beijing.

The U.S. and Iran have had poor diplomatic relations since 1979 Islamic Revolution, when protestors stormed the American embassy and held 52 people hostage for 444 days.

Iran ended up finishing first in the team event Friday, beating Russia in the finals, while Americans Jordan Burroughs, Obenson Blanc, Joseph Kennedy, Harold Metcalf, John Askren, Tervel Dlagnev, and James Bergman scored a 6-1 record against Belarus to take the bronze.

iPhone Safari | Safari mobile is the best iPhone internet browser

safari iphone iconiPhone Safari is a smaller version of the full Safari internet browser that was developed by Apple to run on both Apple computers and PC's. Safari is simply the best internet browser available for Mac and PC next to Firefox in my opinion.

?

Mobile Safari is an iPhone application that comes pre installed on every iPhone and iPhone 4, and it was one of the biggest selling features of the iPhone when it came out. It allowed full desktop style browsing experience while other smart phones had a smaller version of the website that was very difficult to read and browse.

iPhone Safari set the standard and changed the way mobile phones and PDA's (Personal Data Assistance) view web pages.

Mobile iPhone Safari is simple to use, stable, and supports international languages. No matter what language a website is, you will most likely be able to view and read its contents on your iPhone or iPhone 4.

safari-iphone application text enteryWhen you start mobile Safari you have two areas to enter texts at the top. The blue rectangle shown in the picture is where you enter the address of a website such as www.cnn.com or simply just cnn, mobile safari will finish the address for you.

The red rectangle on top right in the picture is the Google search by default. However, you can change it to Yahoo if you want as I will show you later from Settings.

iPhone safari full page browser iPhone applicationMobile Safari runs in two modes. A desktop mode which shows the full page as you would see it on a desktop computer, and an iPhone or mobile mode which displays the page in more compact format.

Those modes are automatically switched depending on the website you are visiting.

Although you can't control in which mode a website will open, there are some iPhone hacks that forces a website to start in desktop mode, as some people like me don't like the compact mobile version. Moreover, many iPhone browsers such as iCabMobile and Atomic nowadays allow you to select which desktop browser you want your iPhone to mimic. Full screen browsing and many other performance improvements add-ons to Mobile Safari are also available in Cydia. Visit the Safari mobile hacks page to learn more.

iPhone safari double tap to zoom iphone applicationsafari iphone double tap zoom the iPhone application

When a website is viewed in its desktop mode, you can double tap on an article to zoom in and read it. The mobile mode has bigger text already? and you can't use the double tap or pinching to zoom in and out. The site is basically fixed in size and that is another reason I like the desktop mode better.

iPhone safari zoomingIf you double tap on another article or a picture, it will zoom in to fill the screen. If you want to zoom more, use the two finger pinch out board to zoom in.

Double tap again on the text or picture to zoom out in stages, until you get back to the full page again.

iPhone Safari Features:

A tap on any link opens that link. However, if you tap and hold on a text link, you get a menu that gives you options to open the link in a new window, or copy the link to the clip board.

iPhone safari tap and hold iPhone applicationpaste text from iPhone safari

Then, you can paste this text link to any text field in any iPhone application. To paste the text, just open any text application like iPhone notes and tap and hold on a text field, then tap the paste icon as shown in the picture above.

iphone safari text copy to other iPhone applicationsMoreover, you can easily copy texts or a full paragraph from a website.

For example, tap and hold on a paragraph you want to copy, a blue transparent rectangle will appear around the paragraph , and another small menu with small icons will appear.

Tap on the copy icon which is shown by the small red rectangle to copy the text to the iPhone memory. Then you can paste the text as shown before to any text application or even an SMS text application.

iphone safari save image to other iPhone applicationIt is also possible to copy a picture from any website to your iPhone photo album in your iPhone. Tap and hold on a picture, then tap the Save Image button. The picture can? be found in your iPhone Photos album.

iPhone safari optionsAt the bottom of iPhone Safari application, there are some icons.

The two arrows at the bottom left allow you to go back and forward if you have already visited some links.

The Bookmarks button with the blue square is where your bookmarks are stored. This button allow you to select any of your bookmarks to quickly open them.

The last button with the Green square shows you how many pages are open currently, a maximum of 8 is allowed. Some iPhone Safari hacks allows you to change this a a more visual tabs format.

iphone safari new-pageAlso, tapping the last button allows you to slide your finger to skim through those open pages.

You can close any of the currently open pages by taping the little plus button at the corner of each open page.

At the bottom left, you can open a new page by typing the New Page button. A blank page will open, and the number of open pages will increase.

iphone-safari-plus-buttoniphone safari optionsTapping the Plus button from the options at the bottom, opens a menu with 3 options.

You can add the website to your bookmarks, or add it to the home screen where the link to the website will be shown on your home screen just like any iPhone application icon.

The last button gives you the option to mail the link to someone from your contacts.

Finally, iPhone Safari can be viewed in landscape mode giving a nice, wide full screen view which is really amazing on the iPhone 4's retina display.

One feature that iPhone Safari lacks is the ability to play flash video. This of course is an iOS lack of support of flash video. However, there is an iPhone browser that actually supports flash video playback right within the browser which is called SkyFire. You can find SkyFire in the App Store for $2.99.

iPhone Safari Settings:

iphone settings application, iPhone application iconiphone-safari-settingsThere are many settings in iPhone Safari that you can access from the Settings application on the iPhone . Tap the Settings app and move down to Safari.

Tap Safari and you will have many options to turn on or off. I really don't touch many of those options, as leaving them as default is probably best.

iphone safari search engineiphone safari search

safari-iphone text enteryHowever, there are a couple of important features that might be interesting.

You can define your default search engine that you see on the top right of every iPhone Safari page. Select Yahoo or Google search engines as your default from the Search Engine button shown above.

The AutoFill is a very nice feature in mobile Safari, and I would leave it on unless you share your iPhone with others, then I would turn it off. This feature saves your information that you enter when filling a? form or an application when you order something online using mobile safari for example.

iphone safari cookiesAlso from this menu, you can turn on or off JavaScript, Plug-Ins, Block Pop ups, and Accept Cookies.

As you visit websites in iPhone Safari, your history is stored, and if you visit a website again, you won't have to type the complete address again.

By just typing the first few letters, the full address will be completed for you from the iPhone memory.

You can clear History, clear cookies, and clear Cashe from memory, so all this stored information is cleared.

iOS 5 Features for iPhone Safari:

Reading List:

Reading list is a feature that was added in iOS 5. It is different than just adding a site to your favorite. If a site can be viewed in reading list mode, you will see the button "Reader" next to the URL as shown below. Simply tap the Reader button, and your site will be converted to a reading list mode.

Private Browsing:

This is a great feature if you want to browse sites that you don't want to be tracked by history.

So once you close Safari, the session is ended, and all the history is deleted.

Who Is Ernest Moniz, Obama's Likely Pick for Energy Secretary?

Approximately 150 federal and state law enforcement agents launched a massive raid on one of the biggest?perpetrators?of government fraud in America: The Scooter Store. Yes, that's right. The nation's largest provider of single-person electric vehicles and power chairs is the target of a federal investigation, probably because many of the people who ride around their "personal mobility?devices" don't actually need them.

Tebow cancels talk at controversial Dallas church

DALLAS (AP) ? New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has backed out of an appearance at a Baptist mega church in Dallas run by a pastor who has created controversy with his remarks about gays and other faiths.

Tebow tweeted Thursday that he canceled a scheduled April 28 appearance at First Baptist Church due to "new information that has been brought to my attention."

"I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day," Tebow wrote.

The Rev. Robert Jeffress, First Baptist's pastor, confirmed in a phone interview that Tebow called him Wednesday night to cancel.

Jeffress said Tebow told him he would like to speak at First Baptist at some point, but "he needed to avoid controversy right now for personal and professional reasons."

Jeffress has preached that gay sex is sinful, Mormonism is a cult and Islam promotes violence and pedophilia. He said Thursday that First Baptist was being mischaracterized as a "hate church," and that the church's teachings were consistent with historic Christian beliefs.

Tebow wasn't going to speak about anything controversial, Jeffress said.

"We had planned for him to speak very positively about the difference Jesus Christ had made in his life," Jeffress said.

Tebow won two BCS championships and the Heisman Trophy at Florida, but he has struggled to make it in the NFL. He barely played last season after the Jets traded for him from the Denver Broncos, where he started much of the season in 2011 and won a playoff game.

Tebow is a devout Christian who has built a large following through his faith. He has addressed church audiences before. Last year, he spoke to about 15,000 people gathered at an outdoor Easter service north of Austin.

Exclusive Reports from Canada and Italy issued by ITCCS

Holocaust Deniers would be proud of Canada's TRC.

(BRUSSELS ITCCS Central) - 1. Genocide in Canada - Even the Official Whitewash now Admits that Thousands of Children Died ... but when will Criminal charges be laid?
by Kevin D. Annett

Ottawa:

Capitalizing on the distraction caused by the latest crisis at the Vatican, Canada`s state-managed "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" (TRC) sneaked into the media today its astounding admission that thousands of children did in fact die in church-run Indian residential schools across Canada.

But only 3000 of them died, that is. In short, a 2% death rate.

European Holocaust Deniers would be proud of Canada's TRC.

To have the gall to even suggest such a ludicrously low death rate - when every government record and all our posted evidence (itccs.org) shows that as early as the first year of the western residential schools, the death rate averaged between 30% and 50% - shows how deep the rot of deceit extends into the stage-managed TRC.

The death rate of 50% continued for at least six decades in these "schools": from 1891 to 1949, when a top government official commented on that huge mortality. 50,000 or more kids never returned - not 3000.

This Big Lie strategy by the church and state-established TRC has worked up until now, but their deception has worn thin. Like the Vatican, the Canadian government must feel especially desperate to risk announcing such a provable lie and exposing such an obvious coverup.

Regardless, all the TRC has done today is to prove that their work constitutes a criminal conspiracy to subvert and obstruct justice. Their duplicity has indicted their government and church sponsors before the law and the world.

This latest act of official deception will figure as more evidence of deliberate cover-up in the docket of our upcoming Common Law Court case against Canada and its Catholic and Protestant churches. In the months ahead, it won't just be former Popes who go to trial for conspiracy and child murder.

2. Fiddling while Rome Burns? The Pope Hides from Sight while Italian Church and State Feign Normalcy
ITCCS Central report

Rome:

The biggest crisis to hit Catholicism since the Reformation keeps spiraling out of control for the Vatican.

Domestic commentators describe events in Rome as constituting the worst political problem for an Italian government in decades, as President Napolitano is being pressured by the Vatican and his Lateran Treaty obligations to aid Pope Benedict evade and obstruct justice.

The entire matter of the Pope's situation and Italian liability for criminal behavior was apparently high on the agenda of Napolitano's recent discussions with US President Barack Obama in Washington, DC.

Meanwhile, keeping an accused Joseph Ratzinger under their protection in defiance of international law, the Vatican's Secretariat of State under Cardinal Bertone is delaying their response to a Diplomatic communique from a European government notifying Rome of impending legal action against Ratzinger.

According to a source who is a liaison with the said government, no official reply has been issued by Bertone's office to the February 4 communique, nor is the Secretariat even engaged in back-channel communications on the matter.

"They are pretending the Diplomatic Note never arrived, and that business is normal leading up to their Conclave to choose their next pope. They must maintain an appearance of stability right now, we are assuming" said the liaison source.

Meanwhile, the church-dominated Italian media has launched a vilifying and uninformed assault on the ITCCS and Kevin Annett without having contacted or interviewed Annett or ITCCS officers.

Nevertheless, ITCCS website traffic has exceeded 300,000 "hits" in the past several days, and legal and political help is pouring in to the Tribunal, especially from Italy and the United States.

The ITCCS is planning public occupations of Catholic churches commencing Sunday, March 24, 2013. It will issue an update and plan of action tomorrow, on this website.
